NIST'S user group, FIB SEM, specializes in electron and ion beam microscopy. The group needed a platform for scientists to share information and discover collaborative opportunities.
Distilling an incredibly complex process like FIB SEM into basic visuals was a really compelling challenge. When building out the visual identity, I decided to focus on a single step in the microscopic journey. This way I could hint at the process rather than distracting the user with unnecessary clutter. The overall design includes simple, graphic elements that give the whole identity a modern and innovative feel.
Both the logo and the color palette symbolize FIB SEM’s layering process of 2D cross sectioning. The crucial 3D aspect of the technology could not be omitted: cue the FIB SEM cube. The cube becomes a recognizable texture and pattern that ties all design collateral together.
